February 26 - Grass Lake Nature Park

It was a beautiful, clear, 26° morning when we got up today, and I attempted to unpack and get used to not driving all day.  By 2:30 p.m., it had warmed up another 15 degrees, so I drove over to the Grass Lake Nature Park and walked in from the 14th Ave entrance, making my way south to near Mud Bay road before returning.  This park was acquired by the City of Olympia in 1989 in response to public outcry over a proposed large subdivision, and was created as a “Nature Reserve”.  A Master Plan was developed for the 165-acre park in 1997, but few of the recommendations have been implemented to date.  Currently, there is a short trail at the Kaiser Road entrance, and a primitive ‘trail’ along 14th Avenue.  I favor the more ‘rustic’ experience.

There was still a bit of snow on the ground, and it was apparent that a number of trees had broken from the heavy load of snow and ice.

Not all that many birds were active this afternoon, as I assume most were hunkering down to stay out of the steady wind.  It felt good to walk in the local woods, after having been on the road for three weeks!
