May 22 - Hueston Woods State Park

Today was a driving day, as I am generally heading south toward Houston, where I’ll be picking my wife, Marty, up at the airport on the 30th & we will visit our daughter Becca for a few days.
Blue Jay - Cyanocitta cristata
On the way, I stopped to do a bit of birding at the Hueston Woods State Park, first stopping to walk around the Four Mile Creek picnic area, then driving over to the Avian Research and Education Institute’s Bird Banding Station to do a bit of birding.  They weren’t doing any banding today, but walking through the woods below Acton Dam, their mist-net lanes were evident.

I continued south and west out of Ohio, and noted that the month’s rains had kept the farmers from working their fields.  Many of the crop lands were completely covered with “weeds”, such as these corn and soybean fields that were a brilliant yellow from what I believe is a Senecio groundsel.
Can't feed the world on this stuff . . .
This afternoon, I drove as far as Paoli, Indiana, taking a room at the Midwest Inn.  It only cost $60.44, but it’s not worth the money.  The internet wouldn’t connect, there were no pillowcases on the pillows.  The positive points are that the Manager was very pleasant and helpful, and, um . . . and, umm . . .  yeah.
Must remember the good parts of the day  . . .
